Good firms that missed out on this edition
We built a long list from Google Maps, Checkatrade, the Trusted Trader house clearance category and Bing, then checked 18 firms in depth. We searched the SEPA public register of waste carriers for every one, read each firm's published recycling figures, and checked Companies House. Each got a score out of ten from the four checks on the right. The table is that score, highest first.
Removal companies and skip hire firms were left out unless house clearance is one of their main services.
In Scotland, anyone who carries other people's waste as a business must be registered with SEPA. Full marks on that check go only to firms we found on the register ourselves. Recycling rates are as published by each firm; we cannot audit them, and firms measure them differently, so ask for a waste transfer note. Responsiveness has not been tested yet.
Volume and average rating on Google, where most clearance customers leave reviews.
Full marks for a published rate of 90% or more recycled or kept out of landfill. 80 to 89% scores 2.4, a recycling policy with no figure 1.2, and nothing 0.6.
Full marks only for a waste carrier registration we confirmed on the SEPA public register. A number on a website that we could not find scores less.
Years trading, backed by Companies House where possible. Website claims count for less, and points come off for a dissolved company or a website that is down.
A house clearance often happens at a hard time, after a bereavement or a move into care. A good firm makes it easier. A cowboy can leave you with a fine.
Ask for the firm's waste carrier registration number and search for it on the SEPA public register. If your waste is fly-tipped by an unregistered collector, you can be held responsible.
A registered firm should give you a written record of what it took and where it went. Keep it with your other paperwork for the property.
Remove documents, photos, jewellery and anything you want to keep before the clearance team arrives. Ask whether the firm offers credit for items with resale value, and whether it donates usable furniture to charity.
In our 2026 table, Jettison ranks first with 9.7 out of 10. Its score breakdown is 3.5 for reviews, 2.3 for SEPA registration, 1.7 for track record and 2.2 for recycling. Junk-it ranks tenth with 5.4 out of 10.
Ask for its waste carrier registration number and search for it on the SEPA public register on the SEPA website. Registered firms should also give you a waste transfer note.
Most of what leaves a cleared house can be reused or recycled. We give recycling a heavy weight because we think keeping a family's belongings out of landfill matters. We use each firm's published figure and score every firm the same way.
It can be, but the executor should be careful. Valuable items may need to be valued for the estate first, and nothing should be sold or given away without the executor's agreement. Speak to the solicitor handling the estate.
Most take furniture, general household items and garden waste. Some items, such as paint, chemicals, asbestos and certain electrical goods, need special handling. Ask before the day.
